At the risk of appearing like a love-obsessed hippy (following a recent “feelings” post), I’m sharing with you today my big heart… quilt.
I’m not calling this “Big Love” like might be the obvious choice. Rather, I’m turning the name into a charge: “Love BIG.” I believe that good centers around doing unto others as we would want done unto us—it’s an exquisitely simple idea that transcends all backgrounds, beliefs, or religions. And who wouldn’t want to not just be liked, but adored. Admired. Considered. Truly loved BIG.
Philosophy aside, I love this quilt. It’s enormous (queen size is an enormous quilt for me), and the softest drapey-drape piece of giant love on earth. I love it so much, I actually kept this one for myself, and have napped happily under it several times this winter (and I’m not a napper! Just tells you how cuddly it is).
I credit the softness of this quilt to Hawthorne Threads’ minky fabric I used as the backing. I was hesitant to use minky because I thought it would make this quilt feel like it’s for a baby, but am glad I allowed my sewing BFF, Amy, to coax me into sticking with the minky. Might I feel like a happy little babe when I lie under it? Sure. But the minky by no means turned this into a novelty quilt (whew!).
THE RUNDOWN:
- Finished size: 80”l x 85”w.
- Front: various fabric collections, but primarily Mormor by Lotta Jansdotter (my most adored fabric designer) on a background of black yarn-dyed Essex cotton-linen blend.
- Backing: Hawthorne Threads Minky Dimple Dot in Plum.
- Binding: Black Grid on White from Lotta’s black and white collection, Sylvia.
- Pieced on my Juki and quilted by me in a freehand dogwood pattern on Treelotta’s long arm machine.
- Location of photos: THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS (Guanella Pass to be exact).
Let me know if you guys have any interest in a very simple pattern for this. I have everything in a spreadsheet I’d be happy to share for free.
Happy 2015! It’s going to be a great year.
xo

Was it easier to quilt it on the long arm with minky? I’d love a minky backing but I don’t think I want to do it on my bitty machine!

Hi Marta, I would love the pattern for your beautiful quilt. I just bought a used ikea table that will be perfect for your sewing table tutorial. That’s my project for the weekend! Thank you so much for sharing.
