from Marta with Love

Nameless No Longer

I finally have a name!  I mean, an embroidered name tag.

I should warn you now that by the end of this post, you’ll be sick of seeing Marta repeated in every photo (I am).  You know, like when you’re signing important documents and writing your name so many times it becomes really weird looking?  Yeah.

My guild mates have been giving me a hard time at our meetings because I either forget my name tag altogether, or when I do remember to bring it, here’s what it would look like:

Pretty cherry!  (I rounded the corners of the card stock last time because I was feeling fancy.)

A few weeks ago I ordered some embroidery floss from Sublime Stitching and decided it was time to get off my bum and finally make myself a respectable name tag.  I can feel my guild president glowing with pride!  Here’s the awesome array of color from which I chose:

For the style of my name, I picked the lovely Lavanderia font to trace onto my fabric because it’s feminine and fun yet clean with a more modern feel than most script fonts.  Here it is traced with my Frixion pen (which later disappears when you run a hot iron over it).

I love the pace of handwork compared to the sometimes jet speed of quilt top assembly.  Plus, I could take it with me!  Like during a shopping trip when I was painstakingly embroidering in the car in between bumps in the road 🙂  It’s a great practice in patience, especially for someone like me who has none.

My name tag measures 5″ wide x 4″ tall.  To attach it to my dorky lanyard I sewed a button hole at the top through which my hook goes.  I also made it with a split pocket on the back to carry my little Moo cards and for my hotel key during Quiltcon in February!  For now it holds an IKEA gift card because I pass IKEA on my way home from guild meetings and always stop for some odds and ends.

I’m excited to now have a handmade name tag of my very own.  It’s really the little things that make me happy these days, people.  Let’s hope I can remember to bring it with me where it’s needed…

So cute. I think you should have freehanded an animal that represents your personality next to your name. For example, I would naturally have a horse head, with a blurb that says, “Neeeeeigh” next to it. You could have done a Pegasus! Possibilities are endless really. Anywho, I love the design and the style is as if you had written it yourself! 🙂

Looks lovely! That really is a great font–I love it!

I laughed when you noted that sometimes words start to look weird. That’s so true! Or if you say them, they sound weird. I always think that about the letter “h”– H, H, H. It’s such a weird word/letter. And then I start thinking about how you’d spell it: aitch? ehch? I guess really it’s just “h.” And now it sounds weird to me again.
