A Quilt Top or Two

After weeks of not sewing a single quilt-related stitch, I whipped up TWO quilt tops this past weekend!

For now I’ll show you the one that took me, start to finish, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday night (cutting included). Yes, I’m a wild one on these cool Friday nights of summer.

I used a kit to make this top (Chevron Cabin by Riley Blake), and although I capital-L love this quilt, I will probably not be buying kits again in future. This was my first quilt kit and I thought the fabric all came pre-cut and all you had to do is sew the pieces together (I see you giggling at me!). I was wrong. A kit isn’t much different from buying fabric for any other pattern. The only difference I could detect is that the required yardage comes in its own handy dandy plastic bag. You still have to cut it up like you would anything else. Also, the kit came with a lot of extra fabric. Not that I’m complaining about having extra Riley Blake chevron in beautiful blue and yellow, but I usually try to be pretty efficient in calculating my fabric requirements and didn’t count on having so much left over.

All that said, I ADORE this quilt. It feels like it belongs on the arm of a rocking chair on the front porch of a farm somewhere. It’s very summery and happy and all-American, which is perfect with Independence Day and the 2012 Olympics right ahead. I can’t wait to quilt it up. Maybe I’ll give it to my mama for her birthday June 30th.
