Trial and plenty of error

With a couple birthdays happening this week, I decided to try Noodlehead’s Open Wide Zippered Pouch Tutorial.  The first one I made has a few oopsies, though, so I’m keeping it!

First mistake: the awkwardly folded zipper tail.  It didn’t turn out smooth and flat like Anna’s so next time I’ll be more careful to pull the zipper away without creating any folds when I sew to the end of that seam during construction.   I’ll also cut less off my zipper at the end –I like the longer zipper tab in Anna’s pouches.

Below, we behold the result of adding a pocket lining to a square-bottomed pouch.  Whoops!  This is the second time I’ve made this mistake, and hopefully my last.  Nobody likes a saggy-bottomed… pocket.  I’m going to try a zippered lining instead for my next pouches.

My own construction shortcomings aside, I love this pouch (as I love every Noodlehead pouch I’ve tried). This one is BIG (I made the largest size) and everything inside is easy to see because of the wide opening. To give you an idea of how big it is, you’ll notice my old Noodlehead makeup pouch fits inside it with plenty of room to spare.

Oh yeah, I also top-stitched around the zipper before constructing the bag instead of after, despite Anna’s explicit instructions for the latter in her tutorial. Clearly my instruction-reading skills could use some improvement.

Wish me luck on my next endeavor!

  • Yarn-Dyed Essex (black used for contrast bottom and flax used for pocket lining)

That color combination of the yellow and the grey/black is quite striking! Well done.

Well, your fabric choices are great! I’m terrified of zippers–I bear the scars of 4-H sewing of yore. 🙁 But one of these days I will prevail on a pouch and face the beast. 😉

I loooove the pouches!!! How totally random though, I was searching for how your new sewing machine was and wanted to find out if you had done an update since you bought yours. How do you like it???? I have a janome now, but both your old model and new one are intriguing. I was thinking of a Juki, but hmm, now I’ll all curious. Would love to hear back from you. 🙂 and so glad you enjoyed the tutorial!!! 🙂
